Towing your Camper Trailer

So you’ve just bought your first camper trailer and you’ve been itching to take it out onto the beach. There are a few things to keep in mind when taking your camper trailer onto the sand.
Firstly, tyre pressure.

When taking your 4WD onto the beach it is important to remember to deflate your tyres slightly. How much will depend on your car and the kind of camper trailer you’re towing, so it’s best to get an expert opinion if you’re unsure.
Sand displacement is key when taking your vehicle on the sand, with or without your trailer behind it. Just don’t forget to re-inflate your tyres before getting back on the road.

In addition to reducing tyre pressure, it is important that once you get up to speed, maintain it. Slowing down to do some sight-seeing can cause sand to build up around tyres, increasing the chances that you’ll get bogged. Maintain a steady, comfortable speed until you get where you’re going if at all possible.

Lastly, if you do happen to get stuck in the sand DO NOT stay on the accelerator. You will only dig yourself in deeper and make it harder to get out. It’s best to always carry recovery gear when going off-road just in case, but if you don’t have anyone to help with recovery, you could employ a rocking motion to gain traction. Above all, if you become bogged in either sand or mud, the most important thing you need to have is patience.

Some situations may only take a few minutes to escape, while others take much longer. It will take as long as it takes.

With all that in mind, we wish you the best of luck on your camping adventures.
